About Jilyara
Craig Cotterel and Maria Bergstrom, along with their 4 children, live amongst the vines in the heart of Wilyabrup. Their 9 hectare vineyard is approaching 30 years of age, planted in 1995. Until very recently, the family grew and sold its high-quality grapes to many of the wineries in the region. However a long held desire to see their fruit through to the finished product led them on an exciting venture to produce their own wines. With Craig tending to the vines, and Maria often hand selling Jilyara wines at the Origin Markets in Busselton, there is no better example of a small, family-run winery.
The name ‘Jilyara’ was inspired by the abundance of bees in the vineyard and derives from ‘Djilyaro’, meaning ‘bees’ in the local indigenous Noongar language.
Kate Morgan has been making Jilyara’s wines since 2018. Prior to Jilyara, Kate has made wines for Fraser Gallop Estate for nearly 10 years. Born and raised in Perth, Kate spent learned her craft with 10 years at Houghton Wines in the Swan Valley as well as vintages in the UK, Duoro Valley (Portugal) and Oregon in the US.
Kate’s winemaking achievements have been recognised by Gourmet Traveller Wine who have named her as a finalist as Young Winemaker of the Year, and the Young Gun of Wine Awards where she was a Top 12 finalist.
